Roger Ailes Starting out as a prop boy, Roger became executive producer for The Mike Douglas Show, a popular daytime variety show during the 1960s and 1970s. What a nice program that was. Then one day Richard Nixon came on the show, took Roger away and made him his media strategist. And mean old Roger Ailes hasn't produced a nice show since. But his commercials made Nixon seem downright cuddly. That's a long way from being the sweaty guy with the five o'clock shadow in the 1960 presidential debate with Jack Kennedy. The 1968 resurrection of Nixon put Roger on the political map. He has since worked with other major candidates, most notably George Bush's 1988 race. Talk about opposites attracting! The gruff, hard-charging media adviser from working-class Ohio, paired with the wealthy prep school graduate from Greenwich, Connecticut -- Bush certainly didn't learn that kinder-and-gentler stuff from Roger. Then Roger went back to doing TV shows. He produced Rush Limbaugh's, but that didn't last long. I guess he didn't realize folks would tire of watching a big fat windbag. Then again, Roger can't fit into a Speedo, either. He next headed to MSNBC where he hired lots of hot leggy blonds as commentators. He's got an eye for the ladies. The thrice-married Roger even had the hots for porn star Marilyn Chambers and gushed to her that he'd seen all her movies. Now he's head honcho at Fox News, where he continues to hire news staff on the basis of sex appeal and political persuasion. Roger insists that Fox's news coverage is fair and balanced, but it clearly tilts rightward and toward sensationalism. After all, this is Rupert Murdoch's network, where Clinton-bashing is practically a blood sport. Roger even hired unsexy Internet gossip Matt Drudge, whose goofy fedora makes him look like he just walked out of The Daily Planet. I wonder when he's going to get that big exclusive with Superman. Man, the 60 Minutes gang must be kicking themselves for not hiring this guy. Real classy joint you're running there, Roger. |
